You Are Here: Track 8: Dance Of The Little Lights From Nowhere
We're up to track 8 of the album today and we've arrived at an instrumental track which was the last one to be added to the running list. It's a track of two halves, which is appropriate as the two halves were written completely separately.
The first part of the track was written by Mark as an idea to place at the end of the first track on the album, River. It was one of those musical doodles that doesn't seem so complicated when you hear it, but then you explain it to somebody else and they think, so its 5 beats, then 6 beats, then 5 again and then 7?
It was left at the end of the River recording, separated by a silent 10 seconds, and it was forgotten about. It was only much later in the recording of the album, probably 6 months later, that we considered whether to continue writing it. We jammed around and we were looking for a counter melody. We already had the main theme and the harmony to it, but it needed to do something else.
It was Jeff who suggested it should do something completely unrelated to the first part. Different time signature, different feel, completely different tempo... what could go wrong? After an hour spent with Jeff counting manically whilst trying to get the bass accents in the right place, the whole thing changed gear. We wrote and recorded the rest of the track within a couple of hours.
We decided that we would pre-empt the track by going back to our original idea and tacking a little teaser on to the end of River as it fades out. If you're reading this after hearing River but not the rest of the album, we've probably just answered what you've been wondering - what is that flute bit all about?
So there you have it. Definitely best heard with the volume turned up to 11. That's how we recorded it and we enjoyed it immensely. You might even hear Jeff counting in the background.
You Are Here is released on 1st July 2019.
