You Are Here: Track 5: Time Flows By7 days to go before You Are Here is released and today we are looking behind the scenes at the creation of the fifth track on the album, Time Flows By.  Time Flows By had a different creative process to the rest of the album. Picture a chilly Saturday morning in the middle of winter, in the suburbs of south Manchester, when Martin fell upon the opening riff during a guitar warm up. He recorded it as a guitar track and brought it along to the rest of the band. “Have a listen to this,” he said, reaching over the pile of scotch eggs and blueberries and plugging in his hard drive. “It’s just a bluesy doodle.” So, fo the first few months of its life, that’s how it was known. Bluesy Doodle.
We had a jam with it and briefly considered making it an instrumental track but Martin went away and came back the next week having written and recorded the vocals. From that point, we quickly added the bass and a heaving Hammond line to beef up the sound, but we never re-recorded the guitar tracks. The ones on the album are the guitar tracks that Martin recorded during the original guitar warm up. We did very little to the song after that, apart from recording the backing vocals. We had to also record the lead vocals again, due to Martin's pronunciation of "beauty" as "beaudy" We couldn't have lived with ourselves. The biggest headache was deciding on whether to include the counter melody on the backing vocals in the last chorus. Hopefully, we made the right decision!
